Destratification fans are a simple but highly effective tool to recycle heat generated in your commercial building. Whether the heat is from processes or warm air heaters.
That means you can save energy and reduce the cost to heat your building.
How destratification fans work
In a warehouse or industrial building with high ceilings, heat rises to the top through convection and gets trapped in the roof. You’ll then spend more money pumping heat into the building to keep the floor area warm for your staff or stock.
And the cycle continues. Warm air rises. Cold air sinks. And you feel cold.
This is where a destratification fan works in harmony with your heating system.
As the heat rises the fan will create a downdraft to force the hot air back down. Cold air will then be pulled up due to the displacement. The hot air will attempt to rise again and be pushed back down. This up and down movement creates a positive cycle of air throughout the space. And now you feel warmer.
Not only does this reduce energy that comes from the warm air heaters, but it also stops you from having areas in the building that are very hot and very cold. Instead the space will be more evenly heated, so you won’t walk five feet through your warehouse and suddenly experience a massive temperature shift.
Do destratification fans save energy?
Yes, destratification fans do save energy, especially inside of buildings with high ceilings.
Here are a few ways they can save energy:
Ceiling fans reduce heat loss through the roof.
How quickly your building loses heat depends on the temperature difference between the ambient outside temperature and the internal temperature. Plus other factors such as how well insulated your building is.
So on a cold day, if the outdoor temperature is 0℃ and room temperature is 20℃ then the difference is 20℃. But in your roof the actual temperature might be 25℃, in which case the difference is 25℃ and so the heat loss will be much greater.
By using a fan to balance the temperature of your room it’ll mean the heat loss is even throughout.
Use process heating to warm your building
Additionally, if you have machinery in your building or use heat as part of the manufacturing process, the destratification fans are able to recirculate that heat. This means your heating system will consume less energy, or you might not even need an extra source of heating.
Types of destratification fans
There are two main types of fans:
Low velocity ceiling fans
the 1st type being a low velocity blade of propeller fan. Typically these are what you traditionally think of whenever you see fans, and they are pretty good for low ceiling heights.
High velocity ceiling fans
Higher velocity and fully encased fans are very popular and are able to be mounted at much greater heights, and are able to be used in all sorts of industrial enterprises. They can either be manually controlled, fully automatic controlled by its own internal systems, or a fan that is controlled by a thermostat.
What’s the best destratification fan for your building?
The type of fan that you will need is dependent on the height of your industrial building, and the amount of heat that you have in that building. If you have a high ceiling and lots of heat, you might need a high velocity axial fan. However, for lower ceilings a few low velocity propeller industrial ceiling fans will do for your needs.
